MapQuests app surges to No. 1 in Navigation after refusing to rename Lake Ontario
image via techcrunch.comThe OG of online mapping, as the company calls itself, announced on Thursday that it would not change the name of Lake Ontario on its maps to Lake America, despite Trumps executive order directing the U.S. Department of the Interior to update the lakes name in the U.S. geographic naming service. As a result, MapQuests mobile app downloads soared, sending the iOS app to the No. 4 position on the U.S. App Stores Top Charts for apps (not including games) as of Monday morning on the U.S. east coast.
After eight days of near Trento, Italy, here are some thoughts on apps:
There are still reasons to have on your phone. It is very useful when you need to answer questions like: "What restaurants are in the area and are open now" or "How can I use public transportation to get from any given Point A to any given Point B at any given time"
However, when it comes to actually finding hiking paths, - which uses data as a base - simply blows it out of the water. Organic Maps simply has a vastly better data set of footpaths than Google Maps, including really small and obscure ones. Sure, sometimes you get a false positive and come across a path that is not public after all. But that's still vastly better than Google leading you into vast circles to the next throughfares.
