OsmAnd - Why Offline Search is So Hard
A concise and beautifully presented walk through how OsmAnd majorly improved its offline search.
Over the last years they realized that offline search is not really good at finding addresses. This is mainly because it was assumed that all (postal) addresses follow common rules (e.g. townstreethouse) which is not the case. They are wildly different across the globe and people type them in various forms (out of order, incomplete, with abbreviations).
After that introduction, I suspected that the solution might just be training some neural network. BUT, it's much cooler...
They are using some clever algorithms where they basically find the matching places for each search word then intersect those sets of places with each other.
Of course it's not *that* easy, so definitely go watch yourself.
The current result is an order of magnitude faster and not even restricted to addresses only.

OsmAnd: Why Offline Search is So Hard
You type an into a app on a phone in airplane mode. There is no server to ask: the phone has to find it on its own. Why is that so hard
We walk the whole road we took to rebuild offline search in : what an address really is, where we got real examples to measure search, why the old algorithm kept failing, and the new search that puts the words on the map.
Chapters
The new search comes with the upcoming OsmAnd 5.5, and you can try it today in our nightly builds. As always, the code is on GitHub:
When search can't find something, tell us what you typed: every miss becomes a test. And help the map: add street names and town boundaries in OpenStreetMap.

Dark Matter in a Simulated Universe
* Credit & Copyright: Tom Abel & Ralf Kaehler (KIPAC , SLAC), AMNH

Explanation:
Is our universe haunted It might look that way on this dark matter map. The gravity of unseen dark matter is the leading explanation for why galaxies rotate so fast, why galaxies orbit clusters so fast, why gravitational lenses so strongly deflect light, and how visible matter is distributed. The featured image from the American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium Space Show, Dark Universe, highlights one example of how pervasive dark matter might haunt our universe. In this frame from a detailed computer simulation, complex filaments of dark matter, shown in black, are strewn about the universe like spider webs, while the relatively rare clumps of familiar baryonic matter are colored orange. These simulations are good statistical matches to astronomical observations. In what is perhaps a scarier turn of events, dark matter -- although quite strange and in an unknown form -- is no longer thought to be the strangest source of gravity in the universe. That honor now falls to dark energy, a more uniform source of repulsive gravity that seems to now dominate the expansion of the entire universe.
