Edward Tufte, the author/speaker/design guru speaks of the importance of subtle color usage to depict complex topography, and we've a fine set of contrasts, first Bradford Washburn's masterpiece map of Denali, versus a promotional map for the Czech Ore Mountains with the hot springs & mining.
While the Czech map is immediately a visual novelty, on inspection it looks as if the mountain ranges are melting & pooling into abstract shapes... and just doesn't read intuitively
